Social Media - Effects On Students
12 year old John’s day begins by checking his facebook, instagram and wattsapp messages, responds every message with likes, hearts and smileys and posts his own quirky comments and selfies and checks on the likes he receives for that. He has his breakfast, watching youtube and his free time is completely used for playing group games from different parts of the world and in between, he checks his facebook, Instagram and wattsapp status. As the day comes to an end, John’s day never ends, his day is still alive and thriving with games and chats and posts. That is the effect of Social Media on students.
Social media, which connects people and helps in exchanging information from different parts of the world in a blink of an eye is both a curse and a boon for students. Before social media, we received limited information through parents, teachers and libraries. Now we can immerse in the ocean of information without leaving the comfort of our room. The range of information we can access is so vast, that every student is confident, that if they miss a class, they can access it through social media.
Social media has hastened, the knowledge growth of the generation so fast, that, even a toddler knows, far more than an adult, which is not surprising. Because of social media, students are more active, confident and knowledgeable of what they want in life and how to go about it, to reach there.
Like every day has a night, there are several drawbacks of social media. The students are more comfortable to mingle with their virtual friends than physical friends. They are averse to communicate with family and friends. The attention span of students has become far lesser, thus making them impatient, distracted, and intolerant. Since social media uses all of the waking hours, the students have less time to finish their daily chores, homework, class work, making them, unpuctual, irresponsible and without focus. If, students are not made aware of the hold the social media has over them, then without doubt, we can say, they will become cyber addicts. So it’s important for parents, teachers and the society to help the child set a line of control on the usage of social media within the timeline of their age.
Social media is here to stay, So its important to teach every student to use social media to hone their skills, instead of wasting their life away, thereby motivating them to make a difference in their life and other’s too, thus creating a far more faster and stronger society where they can live.
